Happy Halloween!

Greetings to all. I am aware that Halloween has come and gone and that Thanksgiving is imminent, but I couldn't let Halloween pass without giving you a chance to admire my handsome lightning bug baby. And if you want to compliment my homemade costume idea then that's ok too!
About a month after Milo was born I decided that he needed to be a lightning bug for Halloween (which was still months away). I got everyone in on it - How can I make Milo's butt light up like a lightning bug's? My dad has a degree in electrical engineering, my husband is the owner of a vast repretoire of projects far beyond the difficulty of this one, and Walmart is less than five minutes away and is known to carry a wide variety of useful things. Ben, the Mechanical Wonder Man, even got involved (so nice!). So, no problem, right? Well, I guess it wouldn't have been if the boys had set their sights a little lower - like just one light that was on the whole time (my original thought - shove a glowstick down his pants). No, it had to be realistic. They wanted the light to fade on and fade off again over and over to simulate the (what I assume is a visual mating call) light of a real firefly.

So they thought and thought and thought and thought and thought and thought and did several little experiments none of which achieved the desired result.
Thanks for trying boys! In the end we ended up with these miniature blinking t-shirt lights I found at the craft store. Still adorable. I bought the onesie at Walmart for next to nothing, I made his little black wings out of an old t-shirt and a couple of coat hangers, I made his striped pants, hat lining and antennas out of an old pair of leggings and I borrowed my mom's sewing machine to sew it all together. I'm not much of a seamstress, but I love doing stuff like this that is just for fun and doesn't have to last or be well made (you can see his hat was starting to come apart in some of the pictures).
This is us at the church Halloween party. Matt was there too (dressed as a jelly fish - Clear umbrella with strips of bubble wrap hanging down) but he didn't make it into any of the pictures. I look a little out of it in this one because I'd been puking all day (food poisoning. Taco Bell is the devil). But we had fun anyway. One last picture - Beautiful baby Lotus in her elephant suit. Hello future daughter-in-law!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I can't tell you how many times Clark and I have turned to each other to say, "Man, that Milo Johnson is a cute kid." Seriously cute.

Milo is adorable! You did a phenomenal job on the costume. I love it! Nice work! I wish we lived closer so we could sew together.

You cut those leggings up!!? I guess it was worth the sacrifice because he looked so cute, but really the leggings???

Hmm... Sorry Denae. Didn't know you were so attached to the leggings. I hadn't worn them in a while and I thought they might be too pirate-y for a respectable grown woman like myself. Guess I should have consulted you first! Live and learn. :o)
