So we did it. Laura and Dustin are now officially LauraandDustin. There were ups, there were downs... it was quite a day. It's probably best if I let the pictures tell the stories.
This one is the left-over Hursts not getting married. Me (wedding decorator extraordinaire), Alex (master of pyrotechnics and drummer in the band, also official nay-sayer), and Jenny (my right hand man and make-up kleptomaniac).
Who doesn't love lavender? I, myself, am partial to it. These dresses, however, are not lavender. I'm pretty sure they chewed up some grape gum and then left it on the sidewalk for a couple months and matched that color to make the dresses. And yes, Laura invited everyone and her mom to be a bridesmaid. In fact, it was more of an honor not to be chosen, so thank your lucky stars if you weren't. I take comfort in knowing that, as the bride's sister, I was only a default and not an actual choice. I'm the fat one on the left.
I have to show this because guess which "Shut up! I am so NOT a diva!" bride simply couldn't leave the flowers on the cake the way the florist (who got paid) did them and so frantically called upon the only other florist (who was getting paid in leftover little tulle bags of m&ms that say "Laura and Dustin August 9, 2008") that was "available" (ha ha - it was about twenty minutes till the ring ceremony and I was neither dressed nor wearing make up) to fix the cake flowers at the last second. That's what I thought. But, as you can see, I did not hold it against her and did perfect as usual.
Here's the non-diva bride performing "The Way I Am" with the whole fam as back up. If you look closely you can see Matt with his new bass (he built it himself!), Alex on the drums, Jenny on back up vocals and the tambourine, and the one with the guitar is me. I think we've now sufficiently proved that I am very bad at guitar. In public. Wearing an ugly purple dress. And there is a video.
Can I decorate or what? These lights were all me.

Who wouldn't want to go to this party?

Sending off the bride and groom. Fireworks, cloth tents, sparklers, paper lanterns, dry grass, fancy dresses and small children. The perfect storm. There was at least one known burn victim. No joke.

One last shot of me and Jenny making the best of it as we lose Laura Hurst (sniff, tear) and gain the new Mrs. Laura Shipp. It truly was one of the most stressful days of my life. Between organizing helpers, making sure everyone was in the right place, averting lighting disasters, running the sound system, playing the guitar and singing, keeping everyone from a painful death by burning due to unruly fireworks (Go Al!), retrieving lost bouquets, and rounding up missing family members, it was more than enough "fun" to last me a good long time. My heartfelt thanks to those involved who made it easier (Jenny, Jill, Yvonne/Genevieve, Denae...). And cheers and best wishes to the newly weds. Baby shower anyone?

Emily - you are such a great writer. I think you should write a book. Everything looks like it was beautiful and like you did a fantastic job (as stressful as it sounded like it was). How lucky Laura is to have a sister like you!
I must have that video
Is that a golf ball retriever holding up those lights?
Good thing you ARE writing a book, right? Someday when we're still alive the world will enjoy the literary works of Ms. Emily Johnson.
You do crack me up though. I wish you would post more please. I love the fat girl on the left. She's my favorite of the default bridesmaids. It really was so beautiful Em & you did an amazing job! She owes you BIG TIME. And why am I in the thank yous... really, did I do ANYTHING? And I'm confused by Yvonne/ Genevieve? And how come I've had no idea you play the guitar?
p.s.
Who was the burn victim?
Yeah! you have a blog and I love it! I hope you don't mind me reading it. you are seriously so funny. I hope you love your new home and you look ravishing in purple.
Congratulations on pulling it off and also on being DONE! The party looked awesome-- I wish I was there.
I love it Emily! Looks like it was a blast-- I want to know how you all got roped into singing. .. oh wait, I think I know. . . love you!
Emily-This was really funny! Wish I could have come! I can't remember the last time I saw your brother and sister....
Emily- love your hair, you look smashing in lavender, and I must agree: I am dying to see that video.
Love the post- You got mad floral skills! I am jealous of your no customer floral job. I want one too.
EMILY LOO WHO! This looks like tons of fun. I am SO glad that there was a fire - because if not for the photographic evidence, I wouldn't believe that such a perfect detail to such a lovely post was factual.
Your blog is stupendous! I'm going to link to you on mine. Also, I really hope to see you this year! If you make it, I plan to have another "Emily and Keddi haircolor adventure". Be prepared!
Fabulous post! I laughed out loud.
Emily, I just found your blog. Congrats on making it through the wedding. I'm sure the flowers were beautiful. We miss you in Chicago!
I didn't know you guys have a blog. Yeah!! Way to go on the wedding. You are Wonder Woman!! We miss you guys so much. At least every other week I tell Zach, "I wish Matt and Emily were here to hang out with us." and he agrees. I hope all is going well. Did I mention that we miss you guys?
I was giggling all the way through this post. I've been a bridesmaid twice now, and, hopefully, I'm going to exercise extreme caution before condemning a "dear friend" to such torture.
hey, you weren't forgotten! You did more than all my other bridesmaids combined! Thanks so much - it wouldn't have been even half as beautiful without you, and my cake would have looked like crap, and mom would have gone insane and me too, and there would have been no bachelorette party and basically no wedding at all. So yes, I forgive you for calling me a diva, but mostly just because of those awesome paper lanterns... :)
